In July of 2007, we visited the local county fair.  Of particular interest that day was the poultry barn.  We took our time walking up and down the aisles, viewing the different breeds of chickens, giggling over the newly hatched chicks and deciding then and there that we wanted to try our hand at raising our own chickens.  And we were off!  We ordered 15 chicks, the hatchery sent 16.  We were certain some would meet their demise en route so we ordered extra - they’re all healthy as horses.  Since the coop is designed for 10-12, about 4 or 5 will be finding a new home with some friends at the other end of the cul~de~sac.
In mid-August, we ordered 15 chicks from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio.  The chicks hatched on Tuesday and we received them via USPS on Wednesday afternoon at noon.  We have four Black Australorps, four Buff Orpingtons, four Plymouth Barred Rocks, one Silver Laced Wyandotte and two Americauna Standards (those little beauties will lay the blue and/or turquoise eggs and have been claimed by M&M).  We also received one mystery chick so there are sixteen total.  Fun times!
